The Paper Tower Exercise  -  Fall 2005

Materials:

one 8 1/2" x 11" piece of paper, 12" of tape,
scissors, 2
class periods and  teamwork

early on, ballast was seen to be very important

the main focus was on the stability of the
bases of the towers

there were never two bases exactly the same

and each base design idea had to be tested, approved
 or discarded

some towers had excellent (and beautiful) designs,
 but lacked functionality

stability of the tower itself was difficult to attain

four total attempts were allowed.  Due
to time
constraints few were able to try
more than two or three designs

the engineering on paper was easier than
the
construction

teamwork was an essential point of the exercise

everyone took this assignment
very seriously...

an initial measurement of over 117cms
 appeared to be a winner...

         ...until 135cms measured in....

                  However...

The winner in four sections of classes measured
in at a whopping 159cms and if it hadn't leaned,
would have measured even taller!

  Great Job!
